KeenSPACE Sees a New Beginning in Comic Genesis

The big 4 at KeenSPOT have finally reached an agreement with the Keenspace artists over the new name for KeenSPACE. The name KeenSPACE has long held confusion when compared to Keenspot. Which one was the free one and which was one of the web’s most successful web comic stories? Fear no more as the new name has been made official: KEENSPACE TO BECOME COMIC GENESIS. In the past “ToonSPACE” was originally chosen as the new name, but it received negative response prompting a number of user polls. This led to KeenSPACE being rebranded as Comic Genesis, or ComicGen for short.

Imryll Comics Returns With a Contest

Another comic has been revived out of the collapse of Roxcomics. Imyrll Comic is now live in the new Transplant Comics community. To celebrate it’s return Jimmy is having a contest starting Monday July 25th with the prizes being a signed copy of “Hat Full Of Sky,” by Mr. Terry Pratchett, a special edition CD/DVD black-cased copy of Kasabians self-titled album, some Imryll sketches, and some very well drawn original ink artwork from a project that never got off the ground. There will be only one winner and the judging is done using Jimmy’s own standard to be announced tomorrow. Continue reading

Gaijin Studios Calls on Cartoonists to Unite

As many have probably found out recently Wizard Entertainment announced the location and dates for Wizard World 2006. If you have been to either of the past ones you can probably know what this means for Atlanta, which only has DragonCon as the closest thing to a comic book convention. To give an idea Wizard World Chicago attracted 54,000 people. So of course I marked this on my calendar. That’s when I noticed something pointed out by an email from Gaijin Studios. Heroes Con in Charlotte, NC occurs on the same date.

Save ConnectiCon Update

The web comics community continues to pull together to aid one of the most web comic friendly cons out there, ConnectiCon. At the time of this post over $17,000.00 has been raised in the few days since the Save ConnectiCon site went online. However, this is still just over half of what is ultimately needed to save the con organizers from financial ruin.

As promised, some web comic creators have begun putting original artwork into eBay auctions, the proceeds of which will be donated. Continue reading

Keensyndicate Adds DJ Coffman to the Staff

Back in October of 2004 the people of Keenspot announced a new service, Keensyndicate, that aimed to take some of it’s considerable library of web comics and turn them into a printed page for newspapers to use, essentially turning many web comic artists into professional, syndicated cartoonists. It isn’t clear just how successful this endeavor has been so far, I can only confirm one newspaper in California using the comics page, but it is clear that the folks of Keen are still moving the project forward.

The web comic community is rallying to help the creators of ConnectiCon. We got word from Phil Kahn, the writer of the web comic criticism site known as I’m Just Saying that he, too, is throwing his hat into the ring. He has posted an eBay auction and Phil will donate the proceeds to the Save ConnectiCon cause.

Whoever wins this auction will get a 2-4 page essay written by me, on any topic of their choosing in any form. Continue reading

Web Comic Toilet Humor … Literally

Cartoonists are traditionally a zany bunch of folks. Due to their chosen profession, or hobby, they tend to find humor in places other people tend not to look, which of course makes their work so entertaining. They also tend to express that humor in interesting ways as well.

Which brings me to Scott Johnson, the cartoonist behind the excellent web comic Extra Life. Scott has chosen a new medium for his work and he wishes to share it with the world … well, the world’s bathroom. Continue reading

Save ConnectiCon

While reading through the various wrap ups of ConnectiCon that artists have been posting I discovered a big problem. The history behind ConnectiCon recently has been somewhat shaky in terms of finances. The multi-genre convention used to be housed on a college campus, but had to be moved due to a sudden increase in the fees charged by the college.

This year it was held in the brand new Hartford Convention Center and while attendance was very solid the financial take from the con Continue reading
