Buy a Shirt or There Will Never be Another Codak Moment

When the Internet first burst into creation, there was about 25 seconds of awe before someone thought to themselves “Hey, I bet I could use this to make money.” 4.3 seconds before that, someone thought, “Hey I bet we could use this for pornography!” Fortunately, eventually people realized that the Net could be a great distribution method for some rocking comic strips. Making money has remained in the backs of peoples mind, and rightfully so. People invest a lot of time and effort into building a site and a comic, there’s nothing wrong with trying to get a little bit back for their effort.

There are many ways that cartoonists have tried to raise some money from their strips. These are just two of the more recent and interesting ones that I’ve come across.

Gary Trudeau Helps Soldiers Tell their Stories

I’m going to begin with an apology, not for the fact that this is the first you’ve heard from me for a couple weeks, but for the story not really being about Web comics. It is however about comics and about the Web so I hope you’ll forgive me.

I found this Washington Post article about Gary Trudeau, the man behind Doonesbury, and this new book he’s helped but together. It’s called The Sandbox: Dispatches from Troops in Iraq and Afghanistan and is basically what it’s title proclaims it to be. For a year now, Doonesbury’s Web site has had a section that lets soldiers currently serving in Iraq post their thoughts, experiences and stories about what they’re going through. The book collects many of these stories and puts them all in an off line presentation more comfortable for many.

Jack Thompson Needs a Life. Scott Johnson has an Extra One.

If you read gaming comics and haven’t seen this yet, you’ll get a kick out of it. Everyone’s favorite crackpot Jack Thompson is fighting with another Web Cartoonist. This time it’s Scott Johnson of ExtraLife for his Make-Fun-of-Jack contest.  Aparently Blog post comments are the hip new way lawyers are putting out cease and desist letters.

Plenty of other sites have tried to summaries the happenings, but I recommend reading it from Scott’s own keyboard here.

Say what you will about Internet Drama, you can’t make up stuff this entertaining.

This List isn’t All It’s Cracked Up to Be

It’s lunch time here in my world. I sitting here eating rock hard rice from Monday, listening to my co-workers discuss who fragged who in Enemy Territory and I’m writing up Web comics news for you guys. Dang I’m dedicated.

Speaking of dedicated, there was an article posted on Cracked magazine’s site about the eight funniest Web comics in existence today. Man, can I write a transition or what?

Wow(io) Those Are Big

I’ve wanted to write about Wowio for a while now and a recent explosion of adds pimping the Web Comic Sore Thumbs collections (and considering the amount cleavage in said advertising, I think pimping is the perfect word for it) appearing of various site’s Project Wonderful banners has given me the excuse I’ve been looking for.

If you haven’t tired Wowio yet, go give it a try. I’ve been using it regularly for a few months now and have nothing but good things to say about it. I even the name, it’s fun to say. Try it. Wowio. I bet you’re smiling right now.

We Have a lot of You’ll Have That

In our latest Digital Strips Update (which can be found with all it’s updatey goodness below) it was brought to my attention that there are Web comics on MySpace. I also tried to bring it to the Internet’s attention that MySpace sucks. It’s not the idea of social networking sites that bothers me. It’s the idea of really dumb ones with nothing but really ugly layouts and pictures of teenagers taking their picture in the mirror that bothers me.

Civilization on the Web? Have they Seen MySpace?

Computer games and Web comics have been intertwine since the get go, we all know this. It’s neither a secret nor an interesting way to start an article. What is interesting is that it looks like the relationship has finally advance to the point where computer games are starting to pay for a date once in a while. ‘Bout freaking time I say.

As part of the big kick off for the expansion pack for Civ IV, Beyond the Sword, 2K games and Fraxis have hired a bunch of the top names in video game comics to do a series of strips about the game. The series will be release over the next few days, ending on August 10th. The knew site Civilization Daydreams has been set up as a hub for all the comics the project creates so those interested don’t have to traipse all over the Web.

The Art of Calling Something an Art

Prolific Web cartoonist and general nice guy Wes Molbash has been invited to be half of an exhibit at the Pump House Center for the Arts in Chillicothe Ohio called the Art of Cartooning. Any sort of publicity like this is awesome and I for one am proud of Molbash. The exhibit will be running from July 17th and run through August 25th and any one in the Ohio area should head out and support one of our own. You can get all the info and check out an invitation designed by Molbash over at You’ll have That.

We’ve Got Comics from Sea to Shining Sea

I’ve recently entered the real world. The world where people have careers, offices and even their own staplers. It’s a beautiful thing. However, as I sit a my desk and try and figure out what it is I’m supposed to be doing, I get a lot of great ideas for comics. Ideas that, knowing me, will never see the light of day.

So while I may not be drawing as many comics as I would like, I have been able to listen to a few more Web comics podcasts, which is nice. A relatively new show (three episodes to date) that I’ve really enjoyed and would like to share with everyone is Comics Coast to Coast.
