Digital Strips is Critiqued By Cortland

The biggest problem with having so many web comics bookmarked is sometimes it takes weeks to get back to a strip you enjoy. Cortland is an excellent example of this as it was about two months ago I read it and so missed this gem.

Not being able to see the web comics we are reviewing is easily the biggest complaint we get, not to mention how hard it is to convince people to listen to a show with people talking about looking at something.

Astronaut Elementary Moves to WebComics Nation

You may have noticed an absence of posts concerning Webcomics Nation but we’ll get to it in a later post. That doesn’t mean that we can’t cover the move of Astronaut Elementary from Girl-A-Matic to WCN. Websnark has a great comment on what this means as AE is one of GAM’s higher profile players, it recently won the WCCA Outstanding New Character Design Award. How many more Manley strips will make the move and is it the first step from being a strip that’s part of subscription to being it’s on independent and self supporting comic?

Wizard Cancels Wizard World Atlanta ’06

Sometimes the best laid plans are spoiled by spontaneous support. Earlier we reported a surge in support for Heroes Con when Wizard announced it was hosting a Wizard World convention on the same weekend in Atlanta. The common opinion was that even thought this date was never made official it was an attempt to stop on competition so Wizard World could become the biggest comic convention. Talk about picking the wrong con to try and crush. The backlash against the draconian move was so drastic as to give Heroes the best line up in its history leaving Atlanta with only Kevin Smith.

Another Mobile Phone Service for Comic Artists

These services are becoming more and more common. Gobstopped is a newly-launched platform where artists can submit their material for publication and it does not charge it’s customers anything for joining. The service is only available in the UK and on top of cartoons you can get short stories as well. There is a catch for this ‘free service’ as you are required to pay a set cost to actually read any of the material. The question becomes if anyone who is already paying for web service on their mobile would be willing to shell out an additional ?4.50 to read a cartoon or story. From the press release: Continue reading

HOUSD and Outer Circle to Exchange Characters

I bet all you comic characters out there have thought to yourselves, “What would it be like to be drawn by someone else?” It just so happens there are two characters which have stopped thinking and acted. Starting tomorrow (Sunday July 31st) and going until Friday, Neil from HOUSD and Peekaboo from Outer Circle are exchanging cartoonists.

You can’t miss what might be the first Web comic Exchange Program. You’re saying to yourself that some of your colleagues have appeared in other strips as cameos or they have been kidnapped and Continue reading

ConnectiCon has been saved

There are times when I am surprised, and then there are times when I am truly amazed. Tuesday of last week we found out that Matt Daigle and Briana Benn where royally screwed by the Connecticut Convention Center and went into additional debt of $34,148.50. This is the sort of event that ruins lives and it could have, except that the artists who attended ConnectiCon banded together to start a drive to SAVE CONNECTICON.

Now you might think it’s close to impossible to raise that kind of money from a community notorious for consuming a product for free. Well let’s see, how long did it take?

Web Comic Wrap-up

It has been awhile since I’ve done one of these but then I’m pretty much a slacker.

Clickwheel – You’ve probably heard news about this all over the place. It’s the world’s first RSS feed for downloading digital comics to the iPod. This is a great little extension of RSS and podcasting that we should have seen coming. The developers on the product are enjoying being #1 in the Top 10 downloaded iPod products while at the same time on verge of creating a business model using subscriptions.

KeenSPACE Sees a New Beginning in Comic Genesis

The big 4 at KeenSPOT have finally reached an agreement with the Keenspace artists over the new name for KeenSPACE. The name KeenSPACE has long held confusion when compared to Keenspot. Which one was the free one and which was one of the web’s most successful web comic stories? Fear no more as the new name has been made official: KEENSPACE TO BECOME COMIC GENESIS. In the past “ToonSPACE” was originally chosen as the new name, but it received negative response prompting a number of user polls. This led to KeenSPACE being rebranded as Comic Genesis, or ComicGen for short.

Imryll Comics Returns With a Contest

Another comic has been revived out of the collapse of Roxcomics. Imyrll Comic is now live in the new Transplant Comics community. To celebrate it’s return Jimmy is having a contest starting Monday July 25th with the prizes being a signed copy of “Hat Full Of Sky,” by Mr. Terry Pratchett, a special edition CD/DVD black-cased copy of Kasabians self-titled album, some Imryll sketches, and some very well drawn original ink artwork from a project that never got off the ground. There will be only one winner and the judging is done using Jimmy’s own standard to be announced tomorrow. Continue reading
