Gaijin Studios Calls on Cartoonists to Unite

As many have probably found out recently Wizard Entertainment announced the location and dates for Wizard World 2006. If you have been to either of the past ones you can probably know what this means for Atlanta, which only has DragonCon as the closest thing to a comic book convention. To give an idea Wizard World Chicago attracted 54,000 people. So of course I marked this on my calendar. That’s when I noticed something pointed out by an email from Gaijin Studios. Heroes Con in Charlotte, NC occurs on the same date.

Websnark Becomes a Business

Recently Eric Burns had more then a little real life problems which caused to reconsider his whole position on merchandising and Websnark. The question is if you start worrying about making money from t-shirts and other stuff will your product be as good? Will trying to sell a product influence the direction and quality of the original product? For many web comic artists the answer is obvious as every artist is dying to make a living from doing something they love.

Wired Covers Web Comics at San Diego

Despite the commanding presence of everything print and movie in the comic industry, there appears to be a soft spot for web comics at Comicon. There is an article at Wired which starts off commenting on Scott Kurtz getting spit on by a passerby. If that’s not enough to get your attention the article was actually pleasant but covered only the typical players of Modern Tales and Scott McCloud. There is great line that our readers might expect in our blog:

Only a few edgy strips, including the ever-controversial The Boondocks and La Cucaracha, appear in the comics pages of mainstream daily newspapers, Continue reading

The excellent strip Gun Street Girl by Barb Lien has picked up Wicker Man Studios and migrated from Graphic Smash to the new free site Panel2Panel. You may recall not to long ago Amber “Glych” Greenlee moving to this very site with No Stereotypes and Red Dahlia. Last Day for You’ll Have That Contest

Our friend and compadre Wes of You’ll Have That has his lovely contest winding up today. We were more then happy to announce it at the beginning of the month and we can’t wait to see who wins. The concept being used for the winner reminds me of Saturday morning cartoons where some kid would end up in his favorite show helping the heroes defeat the bad guys. Don’t forget that on top of making a cameo in this hilarious strip you also get a bunch of loot from viper comics.

Pixar Stomps onto the Web Comics Scene

Nine artists from Pixar have banded together, much like Blank Label Comics, to create comic book titles under one name: E-ville Press. Most of the artists are keeping blogs updated with current strips and the intermediate steps leading up their creation. It looks like some well know artists have accidentally stumble upon one of the potential business models for increasing web comic popularity, using it as a means of eye candy for merchandising. Visit some of these excellent web comics debuting at ComiCon: Continue reading

Svetlana Chmakova debuts monthly strip for CosmoGIRL!

If you thought TokyoPop was making a bid to take over the US then you won’t be surprised by yet another mention of the Manga giant in the media. This time it’s in USA Today but at least it’s in conjunction with a web comic artist. Svetlana Chmakova has landed fantastic deal to draw a monthly strip for CosmoGIRL! called The Adventures of CG staring CG, a college sophomore who lives in Tokyo and is a spunky every-girl hipster heroine. From the article:

The new venture also helps boost the profile of the two-page strip’s creator, Svetlana Chmakova, 25. Her two manga-style online comics are ChasingRainbows (girlamatic.com) and Night Silver (wirepop.com). Her first full-length manga, Dramacon, will be published in October.

I So Want The Shirt

Every once in awhile someone in the web comic community gets elevated to a status where off hand remarks can cause a bit of drama in the huge world that is webcomics. It appears this is something which Eric of Websnark has slowly come to realize over the past few months. He has had a little bit of a bad week (by saying a little I’m using litote to it’s fullest extent) and in the middle of it all he writes what he thinks is a puff piece and ends of starting a full drama.

He talks this over with Kurtz of PvP and ends of with a T-shirt idea that’s pure gold: Continue reading
