Get Your Tasty Updates

Yep, that ‘s my icon. I’m actually making a post and I would have made one sooner but our new guys are just too damn good at their job. I’m actually going to have to start hunting for stuff outside my daily trawl. The past two weeks have been an avalanche of web comic drama that crashed as quickly as it exploded. Fear not, there have been developments:

Jack Thompson – This guy symbolizes the reason I don’t like to be called Southern and why I’m not a lawyer. Gabe nailed it when he talked on how Jill is the best thing to happen to video games, Continue reading

Web Comic Wrap-up

The Devil’s Panties – Journal Comics may have been one of the original forms web comics were posted but they haven’t been exactly leading the pact in web comics recently. One of the few exceptions has been The Devil’s Panties by Jennie Breeden. This semi-autobiographical strip has recently signed with Silent Devil to be collected into graphic novel editions starting in February 2006. This is in celebrate of it’s 4th anniversary.

Daily Grind Iron Man – It’s been awhile since we’ve covered the Iron Man with the annoucement Kurtz was dropping out. Continue reading

Welton Colbert Gets Pimped Out

What is it about grumpy old men that we find so funny. It can’t possibly have anything to do with the Odd Couple getting old but there’s something about the senile old man that makes us yewts double over with mirth. In web comics that character is on it’s way to being immortalized by Ryan Estrada. After first becoming famous in a cover for the Web Examiner the old coot Welton Colbert has performed reviews for the Examiner and Comixpedia while hosting this year’s WCCA.

First 24-Hour Comic For Hire Completed

The historic first 24-hour comic for hire was auctioned last week with the winning bid going to Kasra Ghanbari of Vei Studios, who is working on a project about the Jack Kirby character Modok. It is events such as this that convince me there must be some method to the madness that is Ryan Estrada. After receiving so many bids Ryan decided to sell 12-hour comics to friends for $50 bucks leading into the creation of this little gem of a comic featuring giant robots.

New Subscription Based Group In PixelStrips.com

It would appear that our little round-up was right on the tail of a new collective popping up on the radar. A week ago we saw a new subscription based site appear to compete with Modern Tales. PixelStrips.com is a new community from Kevin Volo featuring horror, sci-fi, superhero, and manga web comics. Most of the comics update weekly with new comics to be added in the coming months. The current cost is $3.95 per month or as low as $34.95 per year, but this is at least a dollar more per month then it’s most popular competitor.

Web Comics Predicted To Win Comics Wars

Why is it that I find most articles like this in University newspapers? A couple weeks ago there was a nice little article in The Eagle about how newspapers are going stale and online comics are just waiting in the batter’s box to take over. The article takes the perspective on who everything will eventually be digital so the natural progression of the funny pages will be the web comic. What makes this article stand out is Jeff Lambert appears to have done his homework and contacted a few of his favorite creators: Nicholas Gurewitch of Perry Bible Fellowship, Ryan North of Dinosaur Comics, and Joey Comeau of A Softer World.

Not So Web Comic

There are times when even the print world gets things right.

Bill Watterson – Thousands of queries were submitted and 15 answered as a way to promote “The Complete Calvin and Hobbes” book, slated for Oct. 4 release. The collection includes every comic from 1985 until 1996. Of particular interested was his reply to the viability of Web Comics:

To be honest, I don’t keep up with this. The Internet may well provide a new outlet for cartoonists, Continue reading

Web Comic Wrap-up

You had to know one of these was coming. There’s been a slight flood of news over the past week and perhaps I can lessen the tide.

Small Press Expo – SPX has come and gone and there was more then a few web comics making their presence know. At this Con outside of DC they have the Ignatz Awards which recognize outstanding achievement in comics and cartooning. A panel of five cartoonists develop the ballot, which is then voted on by SPX attendees. One of the categories is Outstanding Online Comic which was won by The Perry Bible Fellowship (Nicholas Gurewitch) this year.

Fox Picks Up “You Damn Kid!”

It looks like TV stations are catching on faster then the print world, but then I think we all saw this coming eventually. You Damn Kid! is a long time member of Keenspot and has been rather well lately, so well that Owen Dunne and Keenspot have signed with 20th Century Fox Television and former Fox TV group chairman Sandy Grushow’s Phase Two to bring it to the talk box. How does a web comic manage to get on the good side of some TV executives? From the press release: Continue reading
