Web Comic Wrap-up

I felt bad last week that we were not keeping up with all the news, but that was before I tried to find some to post today. It’s as if almost nothing happened and everyone went on vacation. What could have possibly caused that to happen? At least I know now it wasn’t the turkey.

Frank Miller – He may be one of the younger gods but he’s still a god among us mere mortals. So what does it mean when he joins up with Hideo Kojima to release a digital comic? The new “Metal Gear Solid BD” will coincide with the launch of a ?digital comic? version for the PSP.

FAS-FAX Delivers Same Old News

Every year this report comes out and every year it says the same thing. The circulation of newspapers is declining and there appears to be no bottom in site. Of the top 20 papers 18 of them saw decline in circulation and it’s funny to hear the excuses:

Increased use of “do not call” lists … sparked a slowdown in subscription solicitations by phone. “That is a major tool” that [has been] taken away.

Boondocks Brings IT to Adult Swim

If you haven’t seen the first episode then go away before I fart in your general direction. I’ve been waiting for this show for months now. For those who don’t understand you have to live in Atlanta and see the 5 different billboards which are strategically placed along my 15 min drive back and forth to work. Adult Swim has triumphed before with Samurai Jack but I was not prepared for what a show would look like if a Comic writer was actually given full reigns.

Damn…

Web Comic Wrap-up

The news is just pouring in this week. My next post will have some news that I couldn’t help but just foaming at the mouth. But first to web comics.

Comixpedia – What? A news site can cover another news site! Besides, it’s the November 2005 issue of the magazine which deserves mention. Besides the obviously huge collaboration between our Zampzon and Ryan Estrada there will of course be Feeding Snarkies and a little Essence, which one should never miss. This month is all about Mystery WebComics with an interview and Through the Looking Back Glass.

Using Animation For Politics

For those who visit Cagle you are well aware of political cartoons. The whole genre of political satire has a soft spot in the American heart and to this day is considered the highest medium for comics. The question we ask here of course is how can we take advantage of this and exploit it for web comics? It appears the question was asked and answered by the guys over at JibJab. I’m sure all of us can remember the satirical and popular This is Your Land unleashed in the 2004 presidential campaign. This little animation had me laughing for weeks.

Graphic Smash

Making enough money off webcomics to go it alone seems to be one of those elusive golden apples that very few people can reach. How to get people to come to your site and then throw money at you? There are 8000 webcomics out there and the playing field has quite a few heavy hitters, of course you could try to impress those guys in hopes they will direct traffic your way but that’s even harder then yelling out your window. There’s also Comixpedia and Websnark but you either get lost in the amount of news or there’s not enough time to find out how brilliant you are. Continue reading
