[op/ed]The Manly Art of Joey

Daku asked me to write an essay either about Joey Manley’s “Webhead” or webcomics nation. I’ve been mulling this over for about two weeks, I think, and I frankly wish he’d given me a broader topic to work with because I can’t think of too much to say about Webhead or webcomics nation that hasn’t been said and isn’t readily available other places on the web. I do have an observation, however.

As has been discussed on this very podcast, some of us webcomics creators come at this from the perspective that the goal is success. Continue reading

A Word… On The Latest “Controversy”

I read The Geek’s post and thought, “Oh boy, I’ll bet this’ll be good,” so I raced to a happy little google search and found the original post by Joey Manley and all the subsequent comments behind it. I gave the column itself a thorough read, but sadly it and all of the comments afterwards were written in a strange language that I can only describe as a combination of “Elitist Geek Double Speak” with a healthy dash of “Bitter Speak” for color. A language in which self-contradictions abound and (when written) noses must be promptly thrust into the air.

[News/Post] Do you smell something?

Scott Kurtz, in yesterday’s PVP, stood up for “dick and fart jokes” which are a mainstay for comics across the Web. This got me thinking about such jokes and why I can’t help laughing at them

Comedy has many sources. Insults, clever wordplay, logical disconnects and many more. One of the best is recognizability. These are jokes that play off a cross between “it’s funny because it’s true,” and “yeah, I’ve been there.”

[Comic] DS Comic Update and Phil’s Audio

Here’s another Digital Strips comic. Moving right along in my little story I’m expanding the world a tad. I need a place where we can mention all our new additions to the roster, so I’m getting the comic to a place where other characters can come and go.

On another note, we’ve gotten some complaints about the audio quality in recent shows. In case you didn’t catch this situation, Phil’s computer has gone kaput. Continue reading

A Word… On My Opinions and Me

My name is Gabriel Dunston and I am the new opinion writer here on Digitalstrips. I submit that this is indeed cool. I have been bestowed the great honor of ranting to a number of people who have actual intelligence and the luxury of reading my work and instantly researching my subject matter in order to make their own opinions and then (consequently) shove my own down my throat.

I deem that as a great service because, honestly, how many times have you read an opinion in which you wanted quickly respond with Continue reading

[News] Web Comic Wrap Up

Now that the contest is closed we’re ready to get back to the business that is web comic news.

Komikwerks – Every time these guys get quiet I only sit back in anticipation as I know there’s only good news on the horizon. A couple weeks ago was no exception. Two webcomics have joined it’s roster in THE FRONT by Jerzy Drozd and PPV by Drozd and writer Tom Root. You may remember our review of The Front which make rank as our favorite superhero comic.

[News] Sneak a Peak at the Diary of a Cartoonist

If you like web comics and podcasts (and I have a sneaky suspicion that you do), your two worlds have collided again in another fine Internet program.

Scott Johnson, the man behind the ExtraLife comic strip, has recently started a new podcast called Diary of a Cartoonist. Diary is different than most web comics podcasts for two reasons. First, rather than discussing or reviewing strips that are out in the market, through the show Johnson gives the listener a behind the scenes look at how he makes a comic. Also, rather than pure audio, Dairy includes images that coincides with what Johnson is talking about at that point. This means you have to be able to play MPEG 4 format files.
