[Post] The Geek Ponders Update Schedules

One of my favorite webcomics hasn’t been updating regularly recently.

I won’t say which one because I don’t want anyone to think less of the creator because he does have a legitimate excuse. I know he had fair reason to not update because he explained himself in the news section under his comic.

There seems to be a school of thought floating around the webcomics world that there is never a situation that would allow for missing an update. Work conflicts, illness, death nothing strikes these people as a fair reason to deprive these people of the daily requirements of comics.

[News] Happy Burt Reynolds Day everybody

I’m a sucker for holidays. It doesn’t matter which one, Christmas, St. Patrick’s Day, Arbor Day, Wintereenmas, I love the general feeling of fun and good will that surrounds them.

Today is Burt Reynolds day. I guess since tomorrow is actually Burt Reynolds birthday today would by Burt Reynolds day observed. Either way, several strips across the Web are taking part in paying homage to the man.

Yirmumah started this whole thing last year (as far as I can tell, if I’m wrong let me know) and now several other strips Continue reading

[News] CAD cartoon available

The biggest news in the web comic world in which we live was today’s release of Ctl-Alt-Del the animated series. I can’t give my reactions to it because I haven’t seen it and personally I don’t care for the strip enough to pay for it.

However I am curious so if you love Tim Buckley’s work or just have an extra $1.95 to satisfy your curiosity post your take on it in the comment section, or the ever-popular Digital Strips forums.

Since Buckley’s in the news it got me thinking about him and his strip. Like I said, I don’t like it enough to pay for it, but I do read it. Continue reading

When Politics and Comics Collide

The Internet is becoming more and more a part of daily life, even for people who don’t use it for hours online. I work at a campus newspaper and a lot of my coworkers are planning on going into the newspaper business after graduation.

Let me tell you something, the journalists fear the Net.

And really, it a lot of ways they should be nervous. The Internet is a powerful news source, it has better comics than print does (and better ways to learn about and discuss said comics) and if you are picky about what sites you go to, it;s all free.

Theater? Theatre? Ah Poppycock!

Like a phoenix, rising from it’s own ashes. Poppycock Circus has been reborn and now soars through the air as Poppycock Theater.

Poppycock Circus was a webcomic by Steve Carey that ran for about two years until it went on hiatus in April of last year. The strip was great fun and had a style that I really like.

Poppycock Theater will feature many of the same characters as PC but will focus on the various popular movies of the day. The new weekly strip will join the ranks of other big name movie based strips such as Theatre Hopper and Joe Loves Crappy Movies.

Express Service For a New “Panda” Strip

Panda Xpress is one year old today. Now in and of itself that’s a big milestone but there are so many great webcomics out there that strips have anniversaries all the time. What I’m digging on right now is this new contest that the folks over at PX rolled out to celebrate the big day.

Insert Title here is the temporary name of a strip that PX crew has opened up for readers to completely drive the story. On their forum, they outlined the guidelines for readers to be able to submit scripts for the next strip.

A Combination of Writing Giants

I meant to post this yesterday when the strip was up but no such luck.

Many times I’ve heard webcomics referred to as a writer’s medium. Even though there are strips out there like PX, Alpha Shade and countless others that have absolutely amazing, beautiful artwork, to me its the writing that brings me back. Of course good writing and artwork do often appear in the same strip. Don’t think that I’m saying anything otherwise.

This being said yesterday two of my favorite writing-only strips were merged together for the second time in a few days. Continue reading

Webcomics, D&D and me

I have a bit of a confession to make. Despite being known world wide as The Geek, Ive never played a game of Dungeons and Dragons.

Regardless, several of my favorite webcomics are heavily based in the world of D&D and other pen and paper tabletop role-playing games. I really enjoy strips such as Order of the Stick, Commissioned and Dork Tower even though a lot of their jokes refer to the worlds of these games. This is largely because these strips also rely heavily on characterization, epic storylines and other non-gaming themes that keep me interested. Each of these strips have qualities that make them outstanding outside of the realm of niche strips.

It’s Alive! … And It’s PvP!

Scott Kurtz, the man behind the webcomic phenomenon known as PVP had a new years surprise for his readers. Yesterday, with the help of Kristofer Straub the creator of Checkerboard Nightmare and Starslip Crisis, Kurtz posted the first “PVP Alive” an animated short featuring the PVP gang.

According to the announcement, Kurtz is planning on this being a continuing project.

Unlike the animated version of guest strip by Chris Giarrusso I mentioned a few weeks ago, Continue reading
