Right after I post about the Small Press Expo I get another press release from them about their Ignatz Awards. I had wondered in my last post whether or not there would be a web comic presence and this new press release answers that question. The Ignatz awards include an award for online comics. Here are this years nominees for Outstanding Online Comic:

Harvey Pekar Headlines Betheda’s Small Press Expo
This month is the Small Press Expo held in Maryland, an event for independent comic publishers of all sorts of work. I’m not sure what the web comic presence will be like, or if any web comic presence will be there, but all independent cartoonists should be familiar with the work of Harvey Pekar. If you don’t then how dare you call yourself a cartoonist, sir! How dare you! Here is the text from the Small Press Expo (SPX) press release:
BifSniff Relaunches Site, Frank Finally Gets Credit
The excellent and surreal play on words single panel comic BifSniff has entertained me for a while now. It was a very early weekly pick of mine, we talked about it on our 7th show, and I’ve read it ever since. There’s also an interesting blog on the site that does a good job of debating and editorializing happenings in the web comic world.
Well, the guys over at BifSniff have just relaunched their site with a whole new design. Kudos to Frank for finally getting credit on the site. Continue reading
The Webcomic Hurricane Relief Telethon Starts!
Here we go folks, the official Webcomic Hurricane Relief Telethon starts now. Every 20 minutes for the next two days the telethon site will be updated with a new comic strip donated by cartoonists across the web. The effort is to encourage people to donate money to the Red Cross to help fund the relief effort for victims of Hurricane Katrina. Please keep checking the site and please give all you can.
Interviews at Comixpedia
I have always found Comixpedia to be an excellent site for news but I often overlook that the team has interviews, reviews, columns, and an assortment of features. There’s a recent interview with Maritza Campos of College Roomies From Hell that reveals just how long it has been running and where he gets his source material. For features make sure to catch the new Pen to Web Tutorial by Quinn Fleming. This should help me learn at least one thing useful when it comes to web comics.
The Outer Circle Pokes Fun at Digital Strips. Daku, They’re Onto Us!
The cartoonist behind The Outer Circle, Steve Napierski, has included a little dig at us in his latest comic. It’s a funny strip that we’ve reviewed before and his blog does a good job at posting web comic news as well, so if you haven’t been reading this one you’ve been missing out. Go have a look.
As for the accusation, I swear Daku’s green card is in the mail. Honest.

Web Comic Wrap-up
Webcomic Telethon – It’s only another 2 days before Brad Guigar and the Blank Label guys launch the telethon to benefit victims of Katrina. All proceeds will go towards the Red Cross in an outpouring of relief from our little community. Knowing the genius of Brad this event is going to be another perfect opportunity for the rest of the world to see that there is a web comics community and when it decides to help it’s a force to notice.
Penny Arcade – Slap me around and call me Sue. This is like something out of one of the movies where you see the auctioneer spouting Continue reading
Creation of a Web Comic Artist, the Mockumentary
I was cruising around the world of web comics tonight, like I tend to do, and I came across a little gem you fine folks might find amusing. Zach Weiner, the cartoonist behind the web comic Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal and his friends have started posting video episodes of a series they call “The Jerry Simpiro Project” and they define it as “An ongoing documentary series about Jerry Simpiro, an up and coming web cartoonist“.
