The Golem: Adventures of an Israel Super Hero

There is nothing better then being surprised by a new strip. SBC pointed me to Israel?s first nanotechnology-powered superhero comic Golem, now being posted in English on YnetNews. Here is a strip with an art style that should take you back to the beginnings of the comic industry. It is simplistic with an almost minimalist use of lines, instead focusing more on shading and good use of colors.

The writing is superb with a very intelligent combination of politics, religion and humor to make any comic artist jealous. Continue reading

Review of Sore Thumbs

In Sore Thumbs we have yet another Manga with a theme around video games. How this one steals the spotlight is by not only focusing on games but by adding topographical and social humor. This seemingly fresh strip is written by Owen Gieni and Chris Crosby and focuses around the antics of the sister and brother Cecania and Fairbanks and Cecania’s friend Harmony. These antics occur in a, wait give it a minute….

Yes, it’s a video game store called Sore Thumbs. Continue reading

Little Gamers

This is an evil, evil strip by Christian Fundin and Pontus Madsen. Evil because I wanted so bad to go through the archives in a couple of days but the art style of the strip made that simply impossible. Little Gamers is made completely on a computer with any simple line and circle program. It could literally be drawn by anyone. Here in lies the genius of the whole concept. Despite the simplicity of the characters they are unique and easily recognizable with simple yet effective expressions and emotions.

Crap I Drew on my Lunch Break

Jin Wicked is a young studio artist out of Houston, Texas. She is one of the few talented people able to make a full time living out of her artwork. I get the feeling that the commission work she does leaves a little wanting sometimes, which is probably why she created the excellent web comic ‘Crap I Drew on my Lunch Break‘ (crap.jinwicked.com).

The comic is very much like a journal comic that we’ve discussed before. It’s a four panel, 2 X 2 layout and features Jin, Continue reading

Least I Could Do

I can’t stop laughing at this one. Every guy wants to be Rayne but we all know the best we can do is to find a Rayne and be his wingman. Least I Could Do, by Ryan Sohmer and Chad WM. Porter, is a strip about a group of friends spending time together. Most notable are Rayne, who is a guy’s definition of a player, the only reappearing female Melissa, Rayne’s roommate John, and Rayne’s near opposite Mick. The writing is outrageous and centers on Rayne’s plots to get in bed with the opposite sex and all the problems these cause. Continue reading

Review of Scary Go Round

I love getting user submissions which are already on my read list. Scary Go Round is one such strip which can be placed in the mini series category. It is a well drawn strip by John Allison consisting of several different stories with a large cast. Most of the tales are focused around typical horror themes but in a humorous manner in which most horror movies belong.

The artwork is excellent as by the time you finish with the archives I have no doubt you could recognize John’s work anywhere. Continue reading

Review of How to Loathe Drawing Manga Style

Daku certainly disagrees with me on this point, but it’s no secret around here that I am not the biggest fan of non-Japanese artists creating comics in the manga style. Despite that, I’d like to point to a manga style comic created by a non-Japanese artist that I really, really like. Weird, huh?

Everyone should check out ‘How to Loathe Drawing Manga Style‘ by Robert DeJesus. This extremely clever strip is a semi-auto-biographical comic about the artist’s own ambitions of becoming a professional cartoonist. The strip is just getting started, but already it shows some huge potential.

Review of True North

For our final Eyeskream web comic we have True North. Written by Doug Curtis, who brought us Flying Ferret, this strips is about Swat the Mosquito awaking in the closet of Bucky the Golden Gopher to find that he must cope with winter. This is truly a gem of a comic with all the potential to be great. Generally the writing is silly and fun and is more a gag strip with most of the jokes having nothing to do with Swat being a mosquito but more with living in the North. Where the writing could improve is Doug does not go far enough along this vein. Continue reading

Review of Boot Error

In our forth Eyeskream review we bring you Boot Error. This is a cute little whimsical strip that follows the inner workings of Horizon Corporation and in particular, the Marketing Department where Ed, Brooke and Max work. Written by Ivan Pope the major plot involves mostly around Ed and his experiences while still making a gag in each strip. Never following conventional panel layout every day will look different then the previous day. This allows Ivan to take full advantage of the web while still looking clean and well done. Using vector art the characters are simple yet cute giving an overall playful quality. With a little more creative help this strip could easily expand to updating every day.

Review of Hellbound

Our third Eyeskream review is Hellbound. It is an adventure/humor strip in color that follows a demon and an unemployed guy who’s helping her. Written by Eric Nault this is a fun read and has fairly good artwork.

The art is very reminiscent of 80’s comics but takes bits and pieces from different pop culture to help flesh out a growing style. Every once in a while Eric will throw in a little manga style facial expressions and does tend to have elongated necks and arms but in general presents a well draw comic book style strip with good line work and shading. The writing is good if a little goofy for an adventure strip thus the adventure/humor. He keeps the story moving from episode to episode leaving you with a longing for the next one. All around good strip that shows potential.
