Digital Strips 138 – Zuda Watch 4

This month Zuda invited back some of it’s previous competitors for another shot. They had to produce another eight pages to go along with their previous attempts and the longer format really helps the read know which comics are real contenders and which ones were just pretenders.

Because we had so much at our disposal, we were able to really form some strong opinions about most of the entries. Those we liked, we liked a lot and the rest we disliked with more passion than usual.

Do your picks match ours? Let us know what you think.

Digital Strips 137 – Review: Harvey Nominees

We take our shots at the Harvey nominees this time and discuss the differences that occur when you let everybody vote rather than just a select few. It’s a Web comic discussion with deep political overtones that we never mention and never thought about.

The strips this time are:

Diary of a Wimpy Kid

E-Z Street

Penny Arcade

Perry Bible Fellowship

The Surreal Adventures of Edgar Allen Poo.

Digital Strips 136 – Review: Eisner Award Nominees

It’s award season for the world of comics once again, and to celebrate we’re going to show up at the ceremony, mock the losers and try to find some way to attach ourselves to the winner and just make a general mess of everything. But until we can make tickets to the show in photoshop, we’ve made this show where we give our takes on each the nominees and explain why we think it should win, or go down in a pile of flames, tears and broken dreams. We also give our picks on what we think should have been nominated, but didn’t this year.

If you want to read ahead so you get all the jokes, the comics we talk about are as follows:

The Abominable Charles Christopher

Immortal

The Process

Panda Xpress!

Sugarshock (you have to scroll all the way to the bottom then all the way to the right)
Our picks:

A.D.

Riceboy

Digital Strips 135 – Review: Good Ship Chronicles

It’s show time again. This time we review Good Ship Chronicles by Tauhid Bondia and let me tell you, the ship isn’t the only thing that’s good about this strip. We spend most of the time singing the praises of this high class, high adventure set in a distant future where everything is just like Star Trek, only much much funnier. Don’t miss this strip or this episode.

Digital Strips 134 – Zuda Watch 3

In this episode of Digital Strips we talk about patterns. All kinds of patterns and how the should and should not be used in a Zuda entry. Mostly we deal the pattern of most of the entries being of the Sci-fi and superhero genre, and the patterns (read: cliches or tropes) involved in this kinds of stories. We also hit such patterns found in horror, noir, romance and the totally lack of patterns in one of this months entires.

If you don’t know how to vote in this months competition, want to hear if we love/hated your pick or just want to hear some really good transitions by yours truly, look no further than this episode.

Digital Strips 133 – Zuda Watch 2

With our apologies, this is a Brigid-less podcast as someone had to do the hard work from the front lines and get the dirt at New York Comicon. But while the boss is away, the dorks will play. Midnight and I had the place to ourselves. Between loud and obnoxious parties, we did manage to be a little bit responsible. We brought in the paper, fed the fish and most importantly, watched the Zuda.

This month’s Zuda crop is full of grim looks at the future and punching. We explore both of these important literary themes in depth as we review each of the ten contestants and give our thoughts.

Digital Strips 132 – Review: Chronicle

Have you ever had the feeling that you posted the latest exciting episode of Digital Strips only to realize right before bed two days later that you hadn’t? If you have let me know. We probably have a lot of other things in common and should hang out.

This show is old school Digital Strips. In a throw back to the good old days of yore, we offer you a review with a lot of dissenting opinions, vicious rants and personal attacks. It’s as if nothing has changed at all. This week we take on Chronicle by Josh Way. While we all found things that we liked and disliked about the stretch, I don’t think there was a single issue that we all agreed on.

Still, good times are had, laughs are shared and we all feel closer to one another, and that we’re right and the other two are idiots when they disagree with us. You to can take part in these feelings of togetherness. Just plug in your earphones and listen in.

DS 131: Review of North World

It’s that time of the week again folks. Time to sit down with that special some one you love and listen to me and Jason argue about who’s cooler while Brigid rolls her eyes so hard you can hear it. In this week’s episode, we take on North World by Lars Brown.

North World is a strange strip, even though we all had at least one or more solid complaints, we all agree that the end product is a greater comic than the sum of it’s parts. If you love magic epics with classic themes of heroism and loyalty, coming of age tales where the protagonist must return home to face growing up or comic with swords in them, than North World is worth checking out.

After last week’s Zuda watch, our attention spans seem to be waning, and we had a hard time focusing. After 10 whole minutes on Northworld, the show breaks down into a discussion of what really makes a comic on the Web and Web comic. Different schools of thought rear their heads and we have to agree to disagree. At least until we have more time to really yell at each other.

In other news, anyone who noticed the high pitch whining in last weeks show will be happy to know that it’s mostly gone. If you never noticed it before than please, pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.

DS 130: Zuda Reviews Watch 1

This week we bring you not one, not two but ten freaking reviews all rolled into one. That’s some pretty heavy lifting kids, don’t try it at home, we’re professionals. Sort of. In this episode we take a look at each of the competitors currently battling to the finish in this months Zuda competition.

For anyone not familiar with Zuda, its where many different competitors battle it out for readers love and affection. People pick which strips they like and support them and call people who like other strips mean names, then those people get mad and say that the original people are douchebags and then pretty soon everyone forgets that they should just be enjoying good comics, not making other people feel bad.

So really, it’s a lot like the rest of the Internet.

As we go through all ten strips there were very few that we all agreed on. Apparently there’s very little good enough for us all to like or bad enough for us to all hate. So there’s a pretty good mix on Zuda this time around. Let us help you slog through and find the strips that right for you. We’re real nice like that.

DS 129: Review of Lackadaisy

After hootenanny that was this year’s WCCA, we couldn’t help but notice there was quite the hullabaloo brewin’ about this strip Lackadaisy. Rubes we may be, the crew here at Digital Strips have never to be one to shy away from some rip-roarin’, Web comicy fun. And thats just what we found when we mozied over to www.lackadaisycats.com to see what creator Tracy Butler had in store for us.

I think I got some of my hick mixed in with my flapper back there. I apologize.
What we did find however was a really good strip, full of fun atmosphere, strong characters and some of the best artwork any of us have seen on the Web. That’s the short of it, for the long of it, check out the show.

I looks like we’re getting back into the swing of things here. This seems like as good a time as any to remind everyone that we’ll play your audio promos in our show for free. Just keep it short, related to Web comics and in MP3 format and we’ll take care of the rest.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m trying to teach my neighbor’s cats to smuggle rum and shoot a Tommy gun. It’s slow going.
