It’s that time of year again. We’re not talking about Single’s Appreciation Day but the annual We Love Web Comics contest. The past two years have been successes and this year promises to be even bigger. What is the WLWC contest? It’s our love letter to the rest of the web comic world. Digital Strips is here to promote and cultivate what is good in the medium and we can think of on better of giving back to you then a contest where the prize if all your print material as the prize. Enough gushing and on with the contest!

Every Shade From Alpha to Omega
Sometimes I wonder why Joseph and Christopher put up with me for so long. Since the beginning they’ve sent us a constant stream of swag and there’s very few things that make me smile more. You can imagine how happy I was to get the second chapter to Alpha-shade in the mail. The first book was pure art and I had no complaints. If you’ve been keeping along with the story you know that the whole story is unwrapping like the storyboard to a movie. The previous book was full of action, creatures, and high-tech. We were introduced to the world that is ruled by the Great Northern and Southern Empires in an explosion of chaos where everything seems to be on the brink of complete collapse.
Is Charity the Best Form of Advertising?
I’m going to admit right up front that I don’t know much about this holiday. I’ve experienced it twice before but never truly participated. Why? For some reason I’ve never understood charity when it’s a form of advertising. What holiday do I speak of? None other then Free Comic Book Day. Now before you go off and write about how much of a scrooge I am let me finish the rest of this article.
I love free. When I go to the grocery store I take the free food. When I’m at the mall food court I always walk by those kids standing Continue reading
The NEW Digital Strips Livecast!
If you’ve been listening in on the show you’re already aware of this but considering I believe there’s no such thing as too much coverage here’s the blog announcement. Next Wednesday Phil will be hosting the first ever Digital Strips Live review show on Wednesday Feb. 7, 9PM Eastern, where he will subject himself to your every whim. That’s right, the guys who led the way with the first web comics podcast are finally catching up with a live review, months after everyone else. You can’t blame us for not listening, just for being lazy.
I Want To Be A Weenie!
What’s the average age of a web comic? 1 year? 2? Perhaps 100 strips? We get a lot of people telling us about those. What about 7.5 years and 1000 strips? I’m pretty sure that makes you damn near eternal. That’s exactly what PC Weenies is. Krishna M. Sadasivam has been doing his strip so long we all take it for granted he’s been around since the dawn of web comics. The only complaint I have s doesn’t update enough. I mean only 1000 strips? There should be 3015 strips in that archive for me to spend the rest of my life reading and falling out of my chair laughing.
Can I Have Some Peanut Butter With That Jam
What’s this, am I actually writing an opinion piece? The truth is I’ve been so buried restoring all the archives that I just haven’t had the time to do more then just report the news, but it’s finally all over and now it’s time to step out into the light. About every other day the site is sent some news through the news submission link on the left hand side. I highly encourage this as the Inbox tends to be only looked at by myself and we all know how dependable I am. Anyways I was looking through what was posted and found something called the Global Comic Jam. For some reason beyond me I didn’t give it a second thought.

Where’s the Podcast?
It’s been recorded and we’re only a couple days from recording another. You ask yourself “So where is it then?” You would be a sane person and here is my inadequate answer. I’ve been restoring not only the post archives over the past few months but also the podcast archives. That’s right the first 40 shows which includes some of our biggest interviews and reviews will finally be available for you.
The problem is there is an upload limit in libsyn. We typically don’t even use half it but it turns out uploading 20 shows Continue reading
Honorable Mentions
Ever heard of a cascading failure? If you’re a fan of TNG then you probably saw that episode with Data where he’s trying to save his daughter. Well I had one of those. The past two weeks I have been restoring the post archives along with their comments. I managed to get all the posts but in the middle of restoring the comments my laptop decided to fart on me. But that wasn’t enough. Since it had already farted 6 months ago this time it was a nice and juicy one that cascaded down to my USB backup drive and broke it. Yeah that’s right, all the DS archives were located on the laptop and backed-up on the hard drive. Continue reading
Housd Radio and Who’s Your Idol?
After a week of being neck deep in restoring the posts and comments I just have to take a break. What sort of stocking stuffers do I have for you?
Webcomic Idol – I haven’t given this contest its due considering how bomb shelter took a tired idea and applied it to web comics. My first impression is not another knock-off, but the guys seemed to have done it right and picked up a great variety of comics for you to vote off and us judges to comment. I have to admit I liked only half of them and I haven’t done my part as well as I could. It has its problems, Continue reading
Even PC Weenies Can Make a Pretty Site
Have you ever notice just how many times a web comic will update it’s site? You might be saying to yourself “months” or even “years” but then you should sit back and realize how often a regular brick and mortar company updates theirs. Take blue chip companies such as Delta, Home Depot, Coke, and UPS. All of these have had basically the same website concept for 10 years now. There are exceptions though. Delta improved their site 2 years ago (after doing nothing for 5 years) when they finally got a hold of delta.com.
