Web Comic Wrap-up

Bob the Squirrel – It seems there are more and more web comic artists expanding their horizons. Frank Page sent us an email the other day very excited about a new endeavor of his to create a painting every week for the next year. So I think to myself what is so great about an artist painting when they are already drawing a comic? That’s before I looked at his acrylic he has done so far.

You’ll Have That – Wes will be so proud of me for getting this out sooner then the day of. Continue reading

Will You Take the Challenge?

I got this press release from Platinum Studios in the inbox over a week ago but by now all you faith readers probably know just how slow I am getting the news out sometimes. I usually like to do some research so that I’m not just reposting the same thing you see everywhere else. Keeping that in mind I’ve been talking back and forth with Platinum Studios to figure out exactly what is going on and they even graced me with a full interview which I managed to completely screw up. Don’t worry though as I’m working on fixing that issue and you can expect an interview sometime tomorrow hopefully. Here’s the press release about the Comic Book Challenge:

Web Cartoonists’ Choice Awards Return

It’s that time of year again where web cartoonists band together to pat each other on the back. The premier awards in the web comics arena has been gracing us every year since 2001 and came into it’s own 3 years ago with it’s 2003 ceremony. Since then the WCCA Committee has slowly put together the second best reward for doing a job well done, the respect of your peers.

Why have awards in the first place? Shouldn’t the art stand for itself? Of course it should, but then art for it’s on sake doesn’t do anything for the wallet or the ego. Continue reading

Web Comic Wrap-up

More News! I bet you almost forgot we have news here. Yet the inbox continues to tell me otherwise. What do have for you but some movers and shakers.

Heroes of World of Warcraft – A comic we reviewed on our podcast is moving to a new site. You can find the front page (site still under construction) which promises to deliver more of this German strip translated. Also look for the strip to go to print, if you read German that is.

Doctor Fun Closes Office

At what point is it ok to call it quits? The argument I hear most often is when real life intrudes or the artist no longer enjoys writing the strip. What if you made a promise to your readers on some ridiculous scale and you actually achieved it? The last one is where the first strip on the Web steps in. On September 24, 1993 David Farley started what may not have been the first strip on the internet in Doctor Fun, but does qualify as the first on the World Wide Web.

You’ll Have That Signed!

I totally dropped the ball on this announcement but at least I’m getting it posted the day of. Wes Molebash’s first comic book (You’ll Have That) signing of the year is today, June 3rd! The signing will be at ACME Comics which is located at 94 W. Water St in downtown Chillicothe, OH. He’ll be signing books and drawing sketches from 4 PM to 8 PM!

But here’s the real kicker – we’re giving an entire stack of You’ll Have That Vol. 1 away FOR FREE! To top that we’ll be giving away YHT posters and button sets FOR FREE! Just stop by the store, give me a shout, and I’ll hand you a book, a poster, and some buttons! I’ll even whip up a little sketchy sketch for you! So make sure to get there early, because when they’re gone they’re gone. When ACME orders a new supply of books they’ll charge the full price ($4.95), so no rain checks.

Even the Guys In Blank Label Celebrate Their One Year

It always seems the biggest news any strip pr collective can make is getting to the one year marker, and Blank Label Comics is no different. BLC was formed May 23, 2005, by a small group of keenspotters in Brad Guigar, Paul Southworth, Kristofer Straub, Paul Taylor, Steve Troop and David Willis. A year later the group has been living up to all the hype and has added 3 new members since.

To celebrate their anniversary there’s going to be a drawing. The winner of the drawing will receive a signed book from every member of Blank Label. To enter, send your name and address to drawing blanklabelcomics.com

The Problem With Web Comics Being So Easy

Many of you are probably familiar with our purpose here. The only way to keep up with the thousands of web comics is through a lot of categorizing. That’s where finding a comic for the podcast comes in. Last week I finally made it through my queue of completed comics and had to search for more, but as I was going through my bookmarks I found quite a few strips had withered and died.

The web comic medium is most celebrated for it’s ability to allow anyone to jump in and distribute their art to potentially millions of readers. Continue reading
