Just a couple bits of news as I scuttle through my busy day. Day Free Press has added a new comic to its already impressive list of member strips. A Lesson Learned but the Damage is Irreversible has joined sides with the likes of Little Gamers, Dinosaur Comics, White Ninja and others. I’m not to familiar with the comic but I checked it out after seeing it on the group’s web site. From the three I read it should be interesting. It definitely has a unique style that I haven’t seen too much of before. Should be an interesting addition to anyone’s daily checkings.

DS 43: Guest Review of Brainwrap Comics, Panda Xpress, and Melonpool
Digital Strips : Show 43 [16.4 MB] |
Special guest Phil Kahn joins us again for our weekly webcomic review session. Phil is a fellow webcomic “critic” who writes reviews on his own blog I’m Just Saying. Before we get to the reviews during the show we have a lively discussion about the criticism and webcomics, announce a slight delay in our contests announcment while we put together the prize package, and play some new webcomic audio ads. After all that we get into this weeks reviews. Here are the comics we talk about this week:

Wikipedia Webcomic Witchhunt?
I received an email today with some rather odd news. Apparently someone who moderates or edits or whatever on wikipedia has been cleaning house, deleting several webcomic entries and voting for others to be removed as well. Here’s part of the message that was sent to us:
“There’s been a bunch of webcomics removed from Wikipedia or currently on the chopping block… including “The Outer Circle”. Continue reading

Chris Cantrell is the cartoonist behind Haunted Pixel Studios where he puts out the excellent web comics Please Rewind and The Asylumantics. This month Asylumantics celebrates it’s fourth anniversary of online updates.
Here is an official press release from Chris: “Haunted Pixel Studios is proud to announce the upcoming 4th anniversary of our webcomic The Asylumantics? on October 31! To celebrate this occasion, we will be doing a variety of events at the site including a 24 hour book sale, the very anticipated launch of our series 1 custom figurines as well as a contest with an Asylumantics prize pack.

Nodwick To Hench For Spidey
Aaron Williams of Nodwick, Full Frontal Nerdity (my current favorite name for a web comic) and PS238 has officially his the big time. He announced yesterday on his site that he will be having a script he wrote published by Marvel comics. The story will be available in Spiderman Unlimited #13 (scroll down a little for the info) and will be drawn by Casey Jones and Tim Smith so it should look great.
Whether you love them or hate them, Marvel is the big leagues and this is great showcase for Williams?s talent. He?s already shown his skill for superhero story telling as well as the wry sense of humor needed to do Spiderman justice.
Eric Burns Reveals All, More About Websnark Then You Probably Wanted to Know
Today’s Digital Strips comic refers to the prolific writer and webcomic commentator Eric Burns. He’s best known for his cartoon critique blog Websnark, but he has his hands in many a webcomic pot. He writes the very cool comic Gossamer Commons, he writes for the Webcomics Examiner, and he has a recurring column on Comixpedia entitled ‘Feeding Snarky‘. The specific joke here refers to the column Eric wrote back in August. It was a really interesting read, but at the same time it sort of took me by surprise. Continue reading
Schlock Mercenary Fires Blanks – Taylor Laughs At Pun
Long running sci-fi strip, Schlock Mercenary has joined Blank Label Comics bringing even more street cred to the already potent fledgling collective.
Full Press Release at Blank Label Comics.
This Is The Jive All The Hip Kids Are Talking
the recent Blank Label Comics Podcast featured some humorously neutral remarks about “the Artistic History of Webcomics” at the Webcomics Examiner which William G has taken personally. So personally, in fact, that he has vowed to begin commentating on webcomics once again, this time for spite. On a personal note: I love the Blank Label Comics Podcast and Scott Kurtz.
Addendum: Eric Burns sets a full course meal of insight on this situation and webcomics critique.
The Girlier Side
Josh Lesnick’s ‘Girly’ has joined Dayfree Press bringing 10% more pink to the home of Dinosaur Comics, Questionable Content, and Able & Baker.
“Girly” is an excellent example of an ‘infinite canvas’ strip that works. The canvas is in service to the strip, not an excuse for the strip. Scott Kurtz admitted to liking this infinite canvas strip on a Digital Strips Podcast. It is recommended.

Internalize This Deep Wisdom…
Hi. I’m the other new guy, Mr. Hian. Neither as mighty as Zampzon nor Roguish as Daku or even as geeky as the Geek, I have to settle with being addressed as “Mr.” and that’s okay. But let’s bid the introductions adieu and get on with some heavy webcomics reporting because the internets have been busy!
The drama surrounding Jack Thompson and Our Boys continues and, Tycho promises, will come to a thrilling conclusion soon. You will remain posted, but in the meantime, let’s play *catchup– Continue reading
