Interest Piquers #7 ~OR~ It’s On

Well, there it goes. Another whirlwind week come and gone, with nothing more to remember than a few blog posts which commemorate each event.

Oh wait! There’s also Interest Piquers! Ha HA! This week, I found a new favorite strip (gotta be, like, 40 now) in Sheldon the Pig, another of our number was interviewed over at WizardUniverse.com, I started and finished Penny Arcade’s second volume of snarky goodness, and found victory in my efforts to start a small, albeit costly, war with the fine folks at Fleen. Really, they’re the vilest, most evil entity ever to be known on our beloved Interweb, but you know what they say: Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer. Here we go! Continue reading

Free Culture to Hold Free Symposium on Free Comics

I'm in college. I'm married. In short, I'm poor. That's a big thing that got me into web comics in the first place, the price. Now I stay for the awesome but you'll never hear me complain that web comics don't cost enough.

But there's a group of people out there who are helping promote web comics along with many other forms of free entertainment and culture. However, they do it out of moral conviction rather that just being cheap losers like me.

It’s time to help out another webcomic creator, folks. Paul Taylor, member of Blank Label Comics and creator of Wapsi Square, needs your help.

He and his wife have experienced a premature birth of their first child and the increasing (and continuing) hospital bills have created a growing debt. To help, the guys over at BLC have joined forces to bring you original artwork and special extras to be auctioned off to help the Taylors with their immediate needs. The link to the BLC post can be found below; open your pocketbooks, messenger bags, whatever it is you’ve got so you can help and pick up some nifty artwork as your karmic reward.

New Comic Wanted At Viper Comics ~OR~ Join The Pros!

Not really much else to add to this story, so here’s the press release:

Viper Comics is Looking for a Brand New Webcomic

September 19, 2006 ' Viper Comics has announced they will now be accepting open submissions for a webcomic to join the company's existing strips You'll Have That and The Horrible Pirates.

'Viper is always on the lookout for the newest talent in comics and hopefully this opportunity will allow us to showcase a great unknown to a world-wide audience,' said Viper President Jessie Garza.

Creators will need to provide sample pages/strips of their webcomic (with finished art) and a full pitch regarding the characters and content. Only submissions from complete creative teams will be accepted. All submissions should be sent to info@vipercomics.com.

The chosen webcomic will launch on the Viper Comics website alongside Viper's You'll Have That by Wes Molebash and The Horrible Pirates by Patrick Bussey.

You'll Have That is a comic-strip about a young married couple updated every weekday. It has received one print collection with a second due in December.

The Horrible Pirates launched in late 2005 and has since been thrilling readers with the adventures of the world's nastiest pirate crew and their evil monkey rivals. A print collection of the weekly comic is expected for 2007.

So what’re you waiting for? Submit your heinously overlooked webcomic today! I know I already did.

Not Exactly Web Comics

Usually we don’t like reporting on topics which don’t single out web comics as the greatest art form but on occasion there is news out there that we simply can’t ignore.

How many of you remember the controversy over the Prophet Mohammad cartoons? Here at DS we had a particularly heated discussion on the whole topic of freedom of speech and just how responsible one should be with it. In Europe and the Middle East there were both demonstrations and full out riots in which 50 people died. Perhaps the most interesting reponse came from a competition launched in Iran where everyone was invited to create cartoons about the Holocaust. Continue reading

Interest Piquers #6 ~OR~ History Has A Purpose

Greetings, DS loyalists! The entirety of my week has been spent working my way through T Campbell’s A History of Webcomics, which I just finished last night. While I’m still gathering my thoughts for the impending review, I can tell you that my main focus will be this: the book is unnecessary.

A history, huh? Of something that, by Campbell’s own definition and admission, is no older than a decade, if THAT. And someone thought it necessary for us to look back and see where we’ve come from ALREADY? It’s a self-servicing idea that does nothing to advance the medium that is still too young to HAVE a history. I’ll save any more lambasting for the review, which will be coming sometime early next week!

But the news in Webcomicylvania is not all bad! Continue reading

Interest Piquers #5 ~OR~ We’re Getting Big!

What a week! So much news, so little time! The world of printed books is being invaded by webcomics, with several collections and printed editions seeing release this week. Of course, the biggest salvo fired in this onslaught is Richard Stevens’ news of a syndication deal with United Feature Syndicate. But just what are the catches, if there are any, to this deal so sweet, it must have been made with the devil himself? And last, but certainly not least, we’ve rallied the troops to help Lea Hernandez recover from the fire that claimed her house and countless possessions on Wednesday. Recap… GO!

To Be A Game Or Create A Game

There’s two pieces of gaming news that Digital Strips just can’t resist for long. I’m laughing at myself as well as I realize just how late I am telling you about these two games.

The first bit of news you have to have heard of by now because I’m just now writing about it. Two weeks ago I caught this little piece of news from the GameDaily Biz. Penny Arcade and Hothead Games have joined together to create a series of Penny Arcade webcomic-based games. The first is Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness and will be available via digital download. The guys behind Hothead Games Continue reading

Lea Hernandez Needs Your Help ~OR~ A Friend Indeed

Yes, this is all OVER the Interweb already, but in the spirit of gathering as much assistance as we can, I must post it again.

Lea Hernandez, the co-founder and original editor of Girl-A-Matic (among many other achievements) suffered unimaginable tragedy Wednesday morning when her home caught fire, ruining half of the house and severely damaging the rest. The remainder of the details and e-mail address to which you can send your aid are contained in this post from Gail Simone, Lea’s friend and lead force behind this call to arms, after you “read on”. If you support the webcomics movement as readily as I do, you’ll go and donate what you can.
