A Word… On A New Evil

So I was searching through many twisted web rings for web comics I haven’t seen before and I ran across this happy little list of sites: Natalie Dee, Married To The Sea, and Tooth paste for Dinner. I had of course heard of these sites before, but whenever I ask about them I always got the most annoyingly cryptic answers. “It’s really weird, but it’s funny and you’ll like it.” “It’s really dumb, but you’ll like it.” “I don’t really know how to describe it, but you’ll like it.” …And so on.

A Word… On The Latest “Controversy”

I read The Geek’s post and thought, “Oh boy, I’ll bet this’ll be good,” so I raced to a happy little google search and found the original post by Joey Manley and all the subsequent comments behind it. I gave the column itself a thorough read, but sadly it and all of the comments afterwards were written in a strange language that I can only describe as a combination of “Elitist Geek Double Speak” with a healthy dash of “Bitter Speak” for color. A language in which self-contradictions abound and (when written) noses must be promptly thrust into the air.

A Word… On My Opinions and Me

My name is Gabriel Dunston and I am the new opinion writer here on Digitalstrips. I submit that this is indeed cool. I have been bestowed the great honor of ranting to a number of people who have actual intelligence and the luxury of reading my work and instantly researching my subject matter in order to make their own opinions and then (consequently) shove my own down my throat.

I deem that as a great service because, honestly, how many times have you read an opinion in which you wanted quickly respond with Continue reading

Infinite Digital Strip

Hear I was thinking that I would be able to post an example of this for everyone but I’m starting to learn just how finicky artists really are. That’s what I get for thinking I had 6 and now I have 2. You’ll just have to wait for the proof of concept but at the very least I can tell you about my experiment.

So here is my Infinite Digital Strip. It expands upon the concept of the “Infinite Canvas” as proposed by Scott McCloud. My inspiration is the understanding that web pages are not infinite in the manner McCloud believes. Continue reading

When Politics and Comics Collide

The Internet is becoming more and more a part of daily life, even for people who don’t use it for hours online. I work at a campus newspaper and a lot of my coworkers are planning on going into the newspaper business after graduation.

Let me tell you something, the journalists fear the Net.

And really, it a lot of ways they should be nervous. The Internet is a powerful news source, it has better comics than print does (and better ways to learn about and discuss said comics) and if you are picky about what sites you go to, it;s all free.

A Few More Friday Updates, A Brand New Jimmy and Comic “Pamphlets”?

I see that the understated, yet quite funny, Jimmy Gardner has redesigned his site. Jimmy Gardner’s Web-O-Vision hosts his various works, including Imryll and some of the work he did for Pure Profit Comics. This brings me much pleasure.

Should we start referring to comic books as “pamphlets”? Whatever pretentious webcomic prick came up with that idea has earned the scorn of our beloved champion of online webcomic drama antics, DJ Coffman. He attacks the whole idea in a recent Yirmumah comic, and rightly so.

Absence Making the Heart Grow Fonder

Sorry for the lack of attention recently folks. Both Daku and I are on the road for the next week. Daku is in Europe and I’m in Mexico. I didn’t expect stable web access was going to be so hard to find. I’m actually posting this from a PDA connected to a cell phone.

Anyway, I get beck to Philly next week and then I’ll be heading off to Ireland, so this whole month will be pretty spotty in terms of hearing from me. We’re going to do our best to keep the shows coming out on time. Continue reading

FAS-FAX Delivers Same Old News

Every year this report comes out and every year it says the same thing. The circulation of newspapers is declining and there appears to be no bottom in site. Of the top 20 papers 18 of them saw decline in circulation and it’s funny to hear the excuses:

Increased use of “do not call” lists … sparked a slowdown in subscription solicitations by phone. “That is a major tool” that [has been] taken away.

Boondocks Brings IT to Adult Swim

If you haven’t seen the first episode then go away before I fart in your general direction. I’ve been waiting for this show for months now. For those who don’t understand you have to live in Atlanta and see the 5 different billboards which are strategically placed along my 15 min drive back and forth to work. Adult Swim has triumphed before with Samurai Jack but I was not prepared for what a show would look like if a Comic writer was actually given full reigns.

Damn…

Using Animation For Politics

For those who visit Cagle you are well aware of political cartoons. The whole genre of political satire has a soft spot in the American heart and to this day is considered the highest medium for comics. The question we ask here of course is how can we take advantage of this and exploit it for web comics? It appears the question was asked and answered by the guys over at JibJab. I’m sure all of us can remember the satirical and popular This is Your Land unleashed in the 2004 presidential campaign. This little animation had me laughing for weeks.
