Web Comic Wrap-up

The news is just pouring in this week. My next post will have some news that I couldn’t help but just foaming at the mouth. But first to web comics.

Comixpedia – What? A news site can cover another news site! Besides, it’s the November 2005 issue of the magazine which deserves mention. Besides the obviously huge collaboration between our Zampzon and Ryan Estrada there will of course be Feeding Snarkies and a little Essence, which one should never miss. This month is all about Mystery WebComics with an interview and Through the Looking Back Glass.

Tom Sawyer Says He Likes Things All Mixed Up

‘the Kennedy Tales’ gets picked up by Graphic Smash bringing some cred to Eyeskream who are, incidentally, taking submissions through the end of the month.

Joey Manley’s plans to experiment with the untapped adult comics market using the WCN business model have been upset by prospective consequences for eating poop.

Are webcomics artists drawn to the Direct Market like Conan to steel? Joey wants to know.

And that’s your steaming pile for Monday.

Oh No, it’s a Robot

Ryan North, the mind behind the always-unique Dinosaur Comics, has decided to flex his tiny T-rex arms in different field. His new venture is not a new comic, but rather a tool to help web comic fans around the Net more easily enjoy their favorite comics.

Have you ever found a comic that you thought was just great and you couldn?t wait to show your friends? By the time you were able to share it though, weeks had passed and by the time you found it again, your buddies have wandered off bored and disgusted?

Well no more my friends. North has put together a new web site called Oh No Robot that will allow for web comic readers to search for particular strips from their favorite series. The service is free, allowing creators to sign up and either transcribe their achieve or have fans do it. You can read all the details for yourself here.

I did a few searches of North?s own Dinosaur Comics and the system seems to work great. I hope everyone takes advantage of this service so that we can all more easily access all the great comic material out there.

    Using Animation For Politics

For those who visit Cagle you are well aware of political cartoons. The whole genre of political satire has a soft spot in the American heart and to this day is considered the highest medium for comics. The question we ask here of course is how can we take advantage of this and exploit it for web comics? It appears the question was asked and answered by the guys over at JibJab. I’m sure all of us can remember the satirical and popular This is Your Land unleashed in the 2004 presidential campaign. This little animation had me laughing for weeks.

Doonesbury, the Pitfalls of the Buffer and the Benefits of Web Publishing

To describe the comic strip Doonesbury as successful would be a monumental understatement. This year marks 35 years the strip has been in print and it appears today in over 1400 newspapers. Unlike a lot of the syndicated comics out there Doonesbury’s creator Garry Trudeau has embraced the web and what it can help accomplish for him in terms of visibility to an increasingly non-newspaper subscribing public. Trudeau has partnered with the web magazine Slate to make the Doonesbury comic strip available online. Continue reading

Head Injury Theatre Roasts Digital Strips

We received word today that Jared over at Head Injury Theatre has made a little comic about your favorite webcomic podcast hosts and we thought our readers would get a kick out of it as well. You can see it here. Head Injury Theatre has a lot of very funny, and kinda twisted, comics and Jared’s style is original and really interesting. I love the way he drew Daku.

You may recognize Jared’s work from the cover of the Webcomic Hurricane Relief Telethon Book. Continue reading
