Digital Strips 161 – Horizons Watch: Tiny Kitten Teeth and Lovecraft is Missing

Digital Strips 161

Two new strips for you lucky people to check out and I don’t think they could possibly be much more different. From the bright and flashy Tiny Kitten Teeth to the dark and mysterious Lovecraft is Missing, all in one show. Plus throw in all the usual tomfoolery that comes to town when Brigid isn’t around and you’ve got a heck of a show.

Such a heck of a show, that we get into the actual nature of Web comics and what makes them so freakin’ cool. If you think Web comics are cool, than this show is for you.

Digital Strips 160 – Review Wasted Talent

I’ll be honest, if there’s one thing I think there are too many of on this Internet it pictures of cats saying grammatically impossible things. If I could pick a second thing though I’d go with journal comics. They’re worst than video game comics in the range between the good and the bad.

Today we take a look at one of these comics, Wasted Talent my Angela Melick. Does she soar with the Penny Arcades or suck like the many comics who’s names I can’t even remember? Take a listen to find out.

Digital Strips 159 – Interview with David Gallaher

This could easily go down in history as a turning point in the history of Digital Strips. Not only is this hands down the most informative show in a long time, but I don’t think I made a single joke about any bodily function.

The source of the information and probably my new found manners is Mr. David Gallaher, the creator of the Zuda winner High Moon and all around nice/entertaining guy. We talked a lot about how to make comics better, how to market them and what kinds of influences cause a man to create the best Werewolf Western on the Web.

It’s good times, not to be missed by anyone, especially anyone looking to take their comic to the next level of popularity. Join us won’t you.

Digital Strips 158 – Zuda Watch March 2009

It’s just Jason and me for this episode, but it’s a whole new Jason. Tune in to listen to the fightyest (that’s my new word, let’s make it happen) episode of Digital Strips in a coon’s age.

Hopefully our fighting with each other will encourage you to fight too. Post you opinions in the blog, send us audio comments, tweet us. We can’t escape you, just as Zuda competitors can’t escape our steely, critical gaze.

The Cleansing Continues with SGSWCE

I never said I’d be good at these. I want you guys to all remember that.Lightning Lady

The Comic: Evil Inc

The Creator: Brad Guigar with colors by Ed Ryzowski

The URL: http://www.evil-comic.com/

The Verdict: Keeper-for-now

I started following Evil-Inc back when it debuted in full color a while back. I was familiar with Guigar’s work from Greystone Inn and other projects but this was the first time I really took a real look at it. I was not disappointed. This strip has a great premise that really speaks to a comics geek like myself. Just the idea of an all-powerful corporation, employing all the world’s most dangerous villains being run by the cast of your average office sitcom makes me happier than I can describe.

The art is solid. The characters are all well designed and hold together well. The aforementioned color really makes everything pop all the more and makes an already enjoyable picture all the more so.

Like all gag-a-day strips out there, some days are stronger than others, but the over all quality is still good. I usually at least grin to myself in a very pleased way.

All that being said, it’s still not a comic I’m passionate about. If there’s ever a link in the daily section of my comics bookmarks that I just forget to hit, it’s this one. I can’t really figure out why though. I think it’s the pacing, it takes a long time for some of the story lines to finish. This is really sort of a nitpick for me, but that’s what ya’ll come here for isn’t.

Evil Inc is becoming like Beetle Bailey in the comics page I read as a kid (I’m not comparing them in quality, EI is much better than BB. And Lightning Lady is way hotter than Miss Buxley). It’s not the driving force in my decision to pick up the paper, but I’m glad it’s there.

And of course, every week or so Guigar totally nails one out of the park. And that’s more than St. Snorkel ever did.

Another month has come and gone and with it 10 more comics have come to compete for your love and approval. Go check them out quick before your opinion won’t matter anymore.

Listen in and let us know who you agree with (me) and who is full of it (Jason).

edit– made some changes to the sound file, it should be fine unless you can only hear the left ear track, then you’ll hear nothing. If there are any audacity experts out there I have questions.

The Web Comic Enema Continues with You’ll Have That

The next comic in my list is a sad one. Not “My mom ran over my dog today” kind of sad or even “we’re out of ice cream” sad. This is more of a “My best friend got a really hot girl friend” kind of sad. I’m happy for the comic, there’s just no place for me in its life anymore.

The Comic: You’ll Have That

The Creator: Wes Molebash

The URL: www.yhtcomic.com

The Verdict: Honorable Discharge

Not too much I can say about You’ll Have That that hasn’t already been said. It was great. Now it’s over. I’m sad about that, but I’m tired of skipping over the link every morning. It’s time for me to move on.

If you’ve never read YHT, go read it now. If you tried reading it in the past and have since found yourself in a serious relationship, go read it now. Molebash took the slice of life, it’s funny because it’s true, relationship comic genre and mad it his own. Andy and Katie are such realistic characters, I feel like I actually know them. And unlike the characters at QC, I wouldn’t feel intimidated going up to them at a party or something.

Molebash has decided to delay his next comic endeavor to let it mature for a bit. Since mature is one of the first words I think of when I think of YHT (and not the immature kind of mature like the comics with giraffe’s with boobies) I’m sure this can only be a good decision. If not a heart breaking one.

Digital Strips 156 – Review Pigtails and Potbellies

Digital Strips 156 Pigtails and Potbellies

I had a pet pig when I was in high school and my wife looks great in pigtails so I might have a little bit of bias towards today’s strip. Pigtails and Potbellies has a classic Wattersonian feel to it that I really dug on. Tune in to see if Jason agreed and give the comic a look so and let us know what you think.

I also love bacon, but I don’t think that had any baring on my opinion, maybe it did, who knows.

Steve “The Geek” Shinney’s Web Comic Enema Begins

Every few years, it’s important to evaluate your habits and change what is broken, no longer working or just smells funny. It’s the policy I’ve used regarding underwear since I moved out of my parent’s home and I think it can be applied to pretty much everything. Since it’s about that time again, I could either clean out my fridge, or read comics.

I always chose B.

I’ve had the exact same web comics links since I graduated college two years ago. It’s time to clean this old folder of bookmarks out and see what’s still worth hanging on to and want needs to be ignored until it stops fussing. Most of these are still comics I read and love, so it’ll be more of a chance to reflect on why I love them before carefully putting them

Since if I don’t start posting more on the blog Jason’s going to start drawing me in a dress, I’ve decided to blog out my reasoning for keeping or dropping each strip. Some will be long, one will be short. In the case of some of these it will be one line “I’m dropping this sucker since it hasn’t updated since before I knew Barack was a real name.” There’s no order to these other then the order I have them in my links. If there is a reason for the ordering I’ve long since forgotten it.

You guys will probably know most of these comics. Hopefully a few will be new to you though. Even if not, I’d love to generate some dialog in the comments about what you think of each strip.

So come along won’t you, join me for Steve “The Geek” Shinney’s Web comic enema.
