PvP ~INVADES~ Xbox Live

We all know that there is a large overlap in the Venn diagram of geekdom between comics and video games. There’s a good chance that you, yes you, who are reading this very article, own a gaming console, be it Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo branded. Heck, I bet there’s even some who are browsing this write-up while using their game platform of choice.

Well, if that platform you’ve chosen is in the Xbox line and you’re also a fan of PvP, you might soil yourself when you find out the whole PvP gang has invaded your precious gaming space. Themes, gamerpics, and even the first episode of the cartoon series can all be found on Live as downloadables, provided you have the required points for each.

While I’ve never been one for paying for downloadable content (DLC), but the idea of Brent and Cole General Leein’ their way across my Xbox space makes me smile a small smile.  And, as with all things PvP, this is surely just the start of something bigger.

Now go! Redeem your points and brand your Xbox in the name of webcomics!

Webcomic Idol Voting ~NOW~ Open!

It’s time again for the annual Bomb Shelter Comics Webcomic Idol competition! Voting opens today and there is a great crop of talent for the BSC crew to pull from, with genres ranging from anthropomorphic humor to zombie action (I think this will be a tradition for all Idol contests going forward). The list includes big names as well as unknown and should make for a spirited bout from week to week!

Your first round of voting will cut the pool in half, down from ten to five, so make your voice heard! Choose from these ten finalists and don’t forget to stop by the BSC message boards for the judge’s critiques on each contender!

Mr. Ryan Estrada ~IS~ The Winner of Webcomics

It is with a bitterness in my mouth and a pang of desperation in my heart that I concede the possession of webcomics to Mr. Ryan Estrada, the owner and purveyor of RyanEstrada.com, and newly minted site, Cartoon Commune. This new site celebrates the fact that Estrada is now a full-time artist. The venerable artist celebrates this milestone by stealing the position as new artist on the soon-to-be-relaunched poker webcomic, Life’s A Bluff, right out from under my nose and whipping up guest comics for every strip on the Web. Don’t believe me? Read this.

Brinkerhoff Evolves With Wild Hare ~OR~ Dirt Cheap

At this point in the evolution of downloadable content, I am excited.  True, it’s a slippery slope towards making you pay for everything in a given experience, but the idea of buying what I want, when I want, revolving around the base product is very satisfying.  Most webcomics that have chosen to take this route have done so with subscriptions, something that I will only consider for the very best of strips.

Changing Zeros 2 Heroes ~OR~ Can Anything New Be Done In Our Intertubes?

Finding a jumping off point from Phil’s recent article about a possible revival of the world of ReBoot, he and I decided the whole Zeros 2 Heroes initiative might be worth another look. So, I decided to create myself an avatar and see what the site has to offer to comic creators and lovers of the form alike. Granted, the experience was limited, as the site is just starting with its live beta, but there’s enough there to pick apart. So grab a leg, hold on tight, and yank with me, won’t you?

Interest Piquers For The Week Ending July 21st, 2007 -Also Known As- The Day Harry Potter Died

No, that’s not a spoiler of The Deathly Hallows, just a cheap way to grab some eyes and a couple thousand more Google hits.

Why resort to such low, drastic measures? Because there’s nothing better to do. It’s a “make your own news” week and since I’ve been strippin’ on my days off (just the term I use when I’m in the studio, so wash away those cringe-inducing memory burns) I’m just going to wrap up the less discussion-worthy topics here, in another edition of Interest Piquers.

Interview With Dresden Codak creator Aaron Diaz, Part 2 ~OR~ Follow-Up to DS Episode 120

As promised, here is the second half of my interview with Dresden Codak creator, Aaron Diaz!

1) Which of the archived strips are your favorites and why?

I don’t know if I have a single favorite. There are a handful that I enjoy for different reasons. Girl vs. Bear, I think is my most balanced strip as far as using humor, adventure and science references. It has a good rhythm, and I really enjoyed drawing those Civilization Ghosts. Another favorite is Zhuangzi, which I think is understandably one of the least beloved among fans. In hindsight it was way too esoteric for its own good, and without an extensive knowledge of ancient Chinese literature I don’t think it makes a bit of sense. However, I will say that one guy once wrote a magnificent essay on the Zhuangzi comic and how he interpreted it. I think that’s the only essay on my comics that I’ve ever seen. It was pretty neat.

Interview With Dresden Codak creator Aaron Diaz, Part 1 ~OR~ Links GALORE!

On the last episode of Digital Strips: The Webcomics Podcast, Brandon, The Geek, and myself reviewed Dresden Codak by Aaron Diaz. By the time we wrapped things up, it was universally agreed that we loved and wholeheartedly endorsed the adventurous strip.

However, it was also agreed that we still had several questions we wanted answered. So, I took it upon myself to drop Aaron a line and ask for the answers. Luckily, he was more than happy to give an interview, and an awesomely verbose one at that! As such, this is part 1 of the follow-up interview to Episode 120 with Aaron Diaz! Enjoy!
