Webcomics On Vacation ~OR~ Desert Island Webcomics

I’ve got several questions for you guys, so I’ll just jump in and see where we end up. First, how do you organize your webcomic picks? Favorites list on your browser? Internet-based pull list? Or do you simply remember the few that you enjoy enough to keep coming back for more and enter them manually per update cycle?

While I used to utilize the no-fuss, no-muss Internet-fueled list, I found it just wasn’t quite comprehensive enough to fit my needs. So, I moved back to a simple Favorites list, meaning if I was ever away from that one, particular list, my favorite strips were once again up in the air, left only to the memory of a brain struggling more and more to contain the knowledge acquired from day to day. Suffice to say, that pool would be a shallow one to fish from.

If Everyone Would Just Call Me When they Update, that’d be Great

I’m constantly trying to help more people find the joy and happiness that can only found by reading web comics. The problem is, a lot of people not in our little world are tainted by print comics. Print comics may often be trite, cliche and overdone, but they are reliable. People like to know that a new strip will be there for them everyday.

Some strips are really good. They update every day without fail. Other choose a less frequent schedule but still hit each deadline like clock work. Made props goes out to all the work horses our there.

Another Year Another Challenge

Last year saw a lot of new events in web comics. One of the biggest was the emergence of Platinum Studios into the medium and there was huge ruckus over whether or not they were coming in to to ruin it. It’s been almost a year and from what I can tell they have done very little to change it. Just what has been their impact so far? The most obvious is the purchase of Drunk Duck and the complete overhaul they performed. Admittedly this has resulted in nothing more then the hosting site being known as one of the more undependable to being very solid. Yet the competition for web comic hosting is tougher then a year ago with Drunk Duck only taking the number two place behind Smack Jeeves.

It’s because Scott McCloud Never Wears a Skull Bikini

Some people wonder what they should study to know how to make a comic. While I think the multitude of how-too books out there will certainly strengthen your understanding of the medium and thereby your comic, I firmly believe that if you critically read other comics (both good and bad) and see what they do, paying attention to the reasons and the effects, you'll learn enough to let you talent decide if you succeed or fail.

Interest Piquers! ~OR~ Bloggin’ On A Wednesday Afternoon

There’s loads of little tidbits floating around in our precious Intertubes and I’ve just got to pick out some of them before the blockage stops all flow of traffic, incoming or outgoing. Come, converse with me…

Hasn’t Joe and Monkey been awesome lately? Sure, I wrote Zach Miller, the creator of the randomest of random duos, a letter detailing my increased adoration for his creation, but with the second collection, The Definition of Awesome, being nominated for another Blooker prize (the first collection won the award for books based on blogs in the Comics arena) it seemed like another great opportunity to shout my praises.

READ JOE AND MONKEY! IT REALLY IS THE DEFINITION OF AWESOME!!!

How To Con, New York Style

This is probably true of almost every Con but I’ve only been to two and both are very different. 2007 was much better then last year but then that’s like saying this egg is better then that one because it doesn’t have an unborn chick in it. Last year was a disaster on a scale only New York can do right. I still had fun but it led to a lot of pre-planning this year.

First let’s say that New York is a great location but a terrible place to hold a convention. All that stuff that makes NYC great (culture, easy to travel, huge city, history, etc.) make it a pain to attend. Continue reading

The Nicest Guy In Web Comics

There are a few people I respect and even less that I admire. Ryan Estrada is someone who impresses me. It’s not hard to figure out why considering everything he has done over the past five years and of course you ask why not do it yourself. Easy, no one else has the motivation or drive to complete a 168 hour comic, much less hop from job to job around the world. What’s he doing now? Well he’s an American doing customer service support in India. Yeah, I laughed for 15 minutes as well but he’s topping it off with two weeks of exploring which he is calling Ryan Estrada: Expeditions!
