Review of Megatokyo

You had to know this was coming. I made it through Fred Gallagher’s Megatokyo archives and I finally understand the love\hate relationship so many have with this strip. Megatokyo is an anime strip about two guys in their twenties, Piro and Largo, who are stranded in Tokyo. Piro is your normal sane artist who has a tendency to mess up all relationships while Largo is a maniac who is so completely addicted to games that he can’t separate reality from game fiction. Questionable Content

Here is a surprising strip by Jeph Jacques which I was led to by Scott’s blog. Questionable Content might be the best new strip I’ve read this year with many, many qualities I look for in a daily updated webcomic. The story revolves around Marten, a 20-something music nerd, his anthropomorphic PC named Pintsize, and Faye, who accidentally burned her apartment down while trying to make toast. The obvious plot line is the interaction of the seemingly plutonic relationship between Marten and Faye. There are also many side plots such as the Indie scene and making fun of Goths.

Emerald City ComiCon

This comicon is quickly becoming one of the more popular cons as there are many artists living in the Pacific northwest. It has been held in Seattle, WA in early Feb for the past two years and has moved to the Seahawks Stadium / Qwest Field Events Center. This year there will probably be more then 3000 attendees. Many guests and exhibitors this year include Scott Kurtz, Penny Arcade, PV Comics, and Broken Saints.

Sinfest will help you Repent

Continuing the theme of reviewing the biggest strips I can find we bring you Sinfest. Here is a strip I can never decide if I enjoy it or not. The writer and artist is Tatsuya Ishida and uses Sinfest as a social commentary. There is no basic plot other then broad variety of stereotypical characters interacting and commenting on the world around them. First we have Slick who is a wannabe player representing your typical clueless male and there is Monique the tramp representing the worst in females. Supporting roles go to Criminy the bow-tie wielding geek, Continue reading

Mike Wieringo Re-inventing His Childhood

Mike Wieringo has worked in the comics industry for years and has worked on Robin, Superman, Spider-man, X-Men, and tons of other titles. Along with a gallery of his work and links to online stores to buy his stuff Mike runs a blog. Recently on the blog Mike has started a really interesting experiment. Like a lot of comics artists Mike has been drawing since he was very young. He has now started sifting through his old drawings from childhood and is re-imaging them with his current skills. He has images of his original character drawings and his new visions of them. This idea is very cool and well worth having a look.

Pathetic Geek Stories on G4TechTV

Maria Schneider runs a great online comic called Pathetic Geek Stories. In the strip Maria solicits stories from readers about sad and embarrassing things that have happened to them and she turns their stories into a comic strip. What a great use of web comics and the strip is so funny it’ll make you cringe.

Maria will be on G4TechTV tonight on the Screen Savers. If your cable provider carries the channel be sure to check it out. We’ll be talking more about Pathetic Geek Stories on an upcoming show.
