Jon Rosenberg ~ON~ Goats In Print

Recently, Jon Rosenberg opened up about the most privatest details of his life, including the upcoming publication of his long-running, critically-acclaimed webcomic, Goats, to Brian Warmouth over at CBR. Publishing firm Random House is set to start releasing the volumes in June of this year, and I for one can’t wait to finally get into the insanity.

True, Rosenberg has already self-published the strips through 2001, but I only just figured out how to pay for things with Paypal. Go figure. Also, I can’t read archives online as I’ll be inclined to do anything but that with a net-enabled computer in front of me.

So go read the interview to gear up for the upcoming Goats Print-Stravaganza. Of especially awesome note is the origin of the name of the strip. Epic stuff.

Sunday Sitdown ~WITH~ James Randell, Creator of Newspaper Comic Strip

As one of the first round contestants of the 3rd Annual Bomb Shelter Comics Webcomic Idol contest, James Randell, the creator of Newspaper Comic Strip (NCS), found himself ousted along with four others in the first, massive swath cut through the ten finalists. However, NCS had an uphill battle from the opening bell, with a highly experimental storyline involving real-time sequential art and a very small cast of characters.

As a proponent of trying something different, I wanted to give James another few minutes in the limelight to make his case for NCS’ place in the webcomics world and to maybe get a few more eyes on this oddball yet intriguing comic strip.

Digital Strips: In the About section of the Riotfish site, you list Newspaper Comic Strip as the “story of a comic strip character who becomes self aware.” With such a new and experimental style of storytelling as this, what did you figure your audience’s reaction would be to the strip?

James Randell: Hopefully curiosity. At first glance, some readers see it as a daily gag strip that doesn’t make any sense, or worse, isn’t funny. I hope that the longer people look at it, the more their curiosity will start to win over.

CBR ~INTERVIEWS~ Dresden Codak Creator, Aaron Diaz

No other reason for this post other than to mention a recent interview at CBR with… well, the post title says the rest.  It’s also a great reason to post some fabulous DC artwork.

*sigh* So dreamy.  Go read if you’re still interested in the origins of the strip and just what makes Diaz tick like a fine, Swiss watch.

Sunday Sitdown With Charlie Trotman a.k.a. Spike, creator of Templar, AZ ~OR~ Join The Mystery!

It’s no secret that our inbox gets crowded from time to time. It’s also no secret that this inbox is occasionally overlooked, sometimes for weeks or months at a time, making your news, the little details and announcements that you want us to shout from the tippity-top of Mount DS, fall into a black hole where they are only to be retrieved by the most eager and capable of hands.

This means that little, but important, blurbs like the one Charlie Trotman, creator of Templar, AZ, sent us, fall by the wayside until they are way past due and and way past useful. So it was with gracious and humbled fingers that I typed these questions for Trotman, known to most online denizens as Spike, and sent them along, promising a plug for the donation drive which was to cover the costs for printing the second volume of Templar, AZ.

Now, with the drive completed and the costs more than ably covered, Spike gives us the answers to the questions on every Templar fan’s mind. Join me as we delve deeper into the mystery that is the mind of Spike!

Sunday (Wednesday) Sitdown With DJ Coffman ~AKA~ I Can Make A Comic That Might Change the World, Might Change The World, Might Change The World

Two years ago, DJ Coffman was granted his greatest wish when his new superhero work, Hero By Night, was chosen as the first winner of Platinum Studio’s Comic Book Challenge, a contestPlatinum Studios logo designed to discover the next great comic book creator. Platinum subsequently put out an HBN mini-series and then an ongoing series, both of which were met with critical praise and lukewarm sales.

Now, amidst financial troubles, the company has been called out by Coffman, who has cited late payments and even failure to pay as the reason for the sudden forced hiatus of HBN. But as he explains in our brief chat, this halt is being handled amicably and he is already pursuing other endeavors that should continue to bring in those dolla’ dolla’ bills. Check out the candidness, after the break.

Sunday (Wednesday) Sitdown ~WITH~ Frank Frisina

In terms of dream crushers, my next interviewee is the tops. When it came time to choose a new artist to kick start his strip, Life’s A Bluff, Frank Frisina did what every talent scout worth his salt does these days: he held tryouts. The call went out and was answered by many artists, many of whom are already well known in the webcomics and digital comics communities.

With the field narrowed down to a select few (including yours truly), the site’s new main backer, pro poker player, Phil Laak, got the final say in who would usher in the next era of LaB greatness. Sadly, he chose Ryan Estrada.

But this is no place for sour grapes or spilt milk! That place is called LiveJournal. No, this is where I will probe Frank’s mind on the success of LaB under the watchful, cartoony, bulging eye of Mr. Estrada. He’s gotten himself into a bit of hot water with the Poker Player’s Alliance (PPA) as well, so we’ll start off with whether or not he’ll still be doing LaB and go from there. Enjoy the e-mail conversational goodness, after the break!

Sunday (Monday) Sitdown ~WITH~ Cameron Stewart, Part 2

Yesterday, my conversation with Sin Titulo creator, Cameron Stewart, turned into a breakdown of the artist’s workshop, including techniques, processes, and inspiration. While this was fascinating to me, it’s not the meat-and-potatoes of the interview I meant to conduct. It was, however, integral to the understanding of ST, and so there’s a bit more of it here.Sin Titulo logo

But in addition, in this second half I finally get Cameron to crack on the intent of the strip, including his drive to do the strip (hint: it’s not as sci-fi/mystically focused as you might think) and the personal investment an artist should put into his, or her work. Again, the dude’s a pro, so I basically just asked a question or two and let him run wild. Containment was not my intent and I think a very interesting explanation of the strip followed as a result.

Delve into the mystery with me, after the break!

Sunday Sitdown ~WITH~ Cameron Stewart, Part 1

Weeks back, the DS Review Crew took on the Transmission X Sunday treat, Sin Titulo. It was universally agreed that this was a mysterious joy to read and that we would all be checking back regularly on this, the Lord’s day. We also unanimously decreed that we had a lot of questions about the strip, questions we wanted answered. Immediately.Sin Titulo logo

So I got on the stick and started chatting with creator Cameron Stewart. Contained in this update is the first half of that conversation, with the second to follow on Monday. Disclaimer: After realizing that this is the Cameron Stewart who has numerous comic book projects under his belt, including some with the biggest names in the business, I kind of lose my footing and just give the rest of the interview away. Luckily, Cameron is a pro and takes up the slack aptly and readily.

Start the takeover after the break!

Sunday Sitdown ~WITH~ Michael Rouse-Deane

If you know anything about webcomics, you know there are projects popping up left and right involving the best and brightest the Web has to offer. And if you know this, then you know the name of Michael Rouse-Deane.

Michael is the master collaborator behind the cancer-research-friendly softcore calendar series, Tastefully Done, as well as the recent Kid’s Book Project, an innovative amalgam of over 50 different artists (including yours truly) that brought to life a very imaginative narrative.

I recently sat down (and by sat down, I mean “e-mailed some questions to”) with Michael to get his afterthoughts on The Kid’s Book Project and to pick his brain about his next labor of love, The Guest Strip Project. (After the jump: Preview images from The Guest Strip Project.)
