I was going to wait a week to talk about this as to keep with the site's motto but I figured I'd try something different this time.
I'm sure a lot of you have already heard about this weekend's Web comic drama. For those who haven't, hold on to your car keys because here we go. A few years ago there was a Web comic by the name of Purple Pussy by Dave Kelly. One of Mr. Kelly's strips was this one here. OK, do you remember what the strip looked like? Could you recognize it if you saw it again? Good, now look at this one here. Looks like a redrawn version for a book or something doesn't it? Yeah, it's not.
What it is a piece from Todd Goldman's art gallery that was unveiled back in Febuary. Looks suspicious doesn't it? To me it looks a lot like the big P: plagiarism
Some one noticed the similarity and the Net has been in an uproar since. Everyone seems to have an idea on what we, the Web comics community, should do to Goldman. Milholland suggests we throw rocks, Kurtz says everyone should now use the image, robbing him off any potential profit. I'm suggesting something different. I say we hear him out.
Now don't get me wrong. I'm all but convinced that this was a blatant rip-off. Still there's 0.01 percent of me that isn't sure. I want to hear Todd Goldman's side. I want this for two reasons. First it's his right. He should be able to explain his reasonings if he has any. Second, I want to hear him stumble. I want to hear him scramble for footing and fall on his face. That's Kelly's right.
I highly doubt this is a case of great minds thinking alike. Were it just the phrase 'Dear God, Please kill everyone, amen,' then I would be inclined to cut him some slack. However after looking at some overlays that Kelly made himself, you'll see just how much more than just the text this is. Also, plagiarism is a big deal. I mean a really big deal. I was accused of it once and it hurts (don't worry, it turns out the accuser was an idiot). Were this too be a false accusation, we'd have heard from Goldman saying so by now. His silence so far speaks volumes.
It looks like I'll get my wish. There'll be an interview with both parties on Wednesday. I look forward to hearing the whole story. I'll be waiting patiently, rock in hand.
Thanks for blogging about this issue, The Geek! I hadn’t heard anything about it until now and I’m certainly interested to hear what comes out of it after Wednesday.
Oh, I can’t wait to hear this…Be sure to find out if that form letter was real – you know, the one that accuses Kelly of being a pedophile.
